I had some trouble with it but got it up about the time they got to the 2 mile mark.

No big news right now, one guy is out on front, a non-contender. All the favorites are in a large chase pack shortly behind the leader. Pace started slow but mile 4 for the chase pack was 5:00 and mile 5 was 5:03. The pace is getting to where it's supposed to be.

The pack is about to overtake the leader and the real race is about to start. So far, no sign of the loss of any favorites.

Leader just passed 10k in 32:22 with the leaders of the chase pack 3 seconds back.

Wardian, I've ran with him.  He used to do 100ks.  Is it windy out there?

I don't see much wind in the trees but they were talking about some strong winds, even beach erosion warnings nearby.

For the record, as the announcers pointed out, Wardian didn't go out and flame out. He went out at 5:15 pace, his race pace, and it just happened that nobody went with him or faster.

Browne is closing the gap. Hall, Ritz, Abdi, Meb, Browne just behind. Fasil Bizuneh has fallen off.

Reports are that the wind is picking up on the course.

Looks like Culpepper is dragging the chase pack out, hoping to gain some ground on the leaders.

4:44 could have also been downhill. This is in Central Park, a rolling course.

4:59 for mile 12, just over 1:01.

If the wind is becoming a factor, it might make it hard for KK or for anyone else to bridge the gap.

Maybe the bigger people will have an advantage in this wind?  Are they taking turns drafting or is it a free for all?

It's pretty much a free for all. Hall seems to be controlling the pace, I have seen very little of Meb. This could be Meb's race, he's really sitting back and letting the other guys do the work.

Browne is that big guy who, as you stated, may be able to handle the wind. And he's not been taking much of the wind yet, sitting in the back of the lead pack.

Browne is back to the back of the lead pack and Hall is back to the front.

Culpepper has dropped out.

He's built up a few steps on Meb and Ritz is just behind Meb. Abdi has dropped behind Browne.

Hall has built up a bit of a gap, a pack of 4 just behind, then KK behind the pack. Somewhere back there but possibly a bit too far back is Sell.

Reports that Ryan Shay had a medical emergency and is being taken to a hospital.

Great Commentary Ryan and GTF. You guys would have been better than Reavis and Butthead (er, Trautwig)  :P
Interesting how they mentioned Ryan Shay and the medical emergency around mile 20 (14-15 miles after the fact). Not at all surprised that no mention was made of his death until much later.

All in all, the coverage was really good. I started watching around 13 miles, and was amazed at Hall's 2nd half of 1:02:40, nearly 4 minutes faster than his first half on that hilly course!!
I know there\'s a balance... I see it when I swing past.

Let NBC know that. I'd be willinig to take a free trip to Boston and watch the women's Trials while calling the play by play. ;) I'm sure GTF wouldn't mind, either. With their resources, I bet our play by play would even improve.

I was discussing this with an amigo on a run yesterday.  It seems that the chief difference is that Reavis and Trautwig were going on as if they were doing a televised broadcast for NBC, rather than a webcast.  All of the trivial prattle they were churning out might be what is called for (by producers) to engage a more general audience, but a webcast has a more specific target -- only those who are (much) more than marginally interested would be bothering to watch, it is not as if channel-surfers would happen upon it and check it out.  That seemingly should be one of the positives of webcasting, that the product (including the commentary) can be better attuned to an intent audience that does not need so much dumbing-down and over-explanation and just plain inane observations.  It could be a more focussed product, catering more closely to the preferences of the core audience.  It could be that they were acting on the instructions of their producers or perhaps the producers did not really care and let them do what they wanted since those who are interested in watching the race itself are not likely to let some gasbag commentary lead them to stop watching.  Perhaps there could be some kind of live audio up-link that someone could arrange to have some volunteer commentary from better sources and muting the video while watching the women's OT.  Any word on a possible women's OT webcast?

I haven't heard any official word but I'm under the impression that there will be a similar arrangement for the women. NBC/Mediazone are going for a big push into the Olympics. It's possible that we'll see the same kind of coverage, though possibly not for free, for the Olympics next year.
