The violence in Kenya has affected the running world again, this time taking defending Grandma's Marathon champion Wesly Ngetich. I'm sure I speak for many in the running world when I say our thoughts are with all of those, runners and non-runners, who are affected by the violence that is inflicting this country that has given distance running so much.
Two-time Grandma’s Marathon champion Wesly Ngetich of Trans Mara, Kenya, died today during violence in his home country, according to information provided by his manager, Hussein Makke.
Ngetich, 34, who won Grandma’s Marathon in 2007 and 2005, was shot through the chest with an arrow during fighting in his hometown, not far from Masai Mara.
“This is an extremely sad time for us because he was such a good friend to our race,” said Grandma’s Marathon executive director Scott Keenan. According to a report by David Monti of Race Results Weekly, Monti received information from Makke, who had gotten the news of Ngetich’s death from his on-site manager in Kenya, Francis Kamau.
