Cuba blames US for Olympic protests
« on: April 14, 2008, 07:09:10 AM »
Quote
HAVANA (AP) - Cuba's top sports official accused the U.S. government of masterminding protests to disrupt the torch relay for the Beijing Olympics, part of what he called a U.S. plan to promote an international boycott of the games.

American officials are behind ''a ferocious'' campaign against China, to convince the international community to boycott some or all of the games' events, Jose Ramon Fernandez, president of the Cuban Olympic Committee, told The Associated Press late Saturday.

This must be true - I'll bet this Jose has taped phone calls between US officials and private citizans of France, Germany and the other countries that have experienced this problem.

Jose also probably has pictures of the Aliens that the US Government has in hiding in Area 51.

You gotta love all the haters.

Yes - haters.  Those that have no clue about the world that point the finger.  Especially in Jose's case - he has most likely never left Cuba (since that is the law there) and the (pro communist - anti human rights) Government owned radio, tv and (all other) media are Jose's only source of info -

He hates without knowing.

Oh you mean like those governments (and those who elect those who serve in said governments) that hold onto archaic and pointless embargoes that have targeted the welfare of an entire nation of regular people for decades?  These kinds of issues and what they arise in response to never fall along the neat, cut-and-dried lines of "haters" and, um, "lovers"(?).  The USA does not ride a white horse and wear a white hat with respect to almost anything regarding Cuba -- Fernandez is likely out to lunch on this, but he and his government are not the only ones to blame for that.

This is true - in part -

Why were the embargoes put in place to begin with?  Was it for human rights issues or anti-communism?  (Since I really do not know.)

The question then becomes (if human rights issue) how do we effect change - embargoe, forceable removal of a military dictator that killed the residing government leaders and took over the country, just keep our hands off of them entirely and pretend nothing is going on?

What is the solution?

The embargo has had nothing to do with "human rights."  Which military dictator do you mean?  Batista, the one installed by the CIA?

Anyway, what has the 40+ year embargo really accomplished?

So true!  Beyond the impact on the people of Cuba it also cuts a divide through, um, cross-cultural exchange between Cubans and 'US Americans.'  I happen to know someone who has been to Cuba often (engaged in humanitarian aid) and I am definitely intrigued to visit yet with the current travel restrictions in place c/o the good ol' State Dept. I am not sure when that would be a possibility -- unless, that is, I do the sneak-in-via-Mexico maneuver.   8)
