Irina Mikitenko has once more confirmed her fine spring form. Germany’s surprise winner of the Flora London Marathon took the Avon Women’s Race in Berlin on Saturday evening (17), which had a record entry of 13,048 runners. Clocking 32:24 minutes for the 10km race with start and finish near to Brandenburg Gate Mikitenko now made it four wins in four races this year.
Before London she had won the half marathon in Paderborn with a personal best of 68:51 minutes, then clocked a German record of 2:24:14 (though not the fastest German time, which belongs to Uta Pippig with 2:21:45) and recently took the national 10,000 m title. “This race was almost like a training run for me,” said Mikitenko after leaving behind Melanie Kraus after half way. Kraus, who had won the Düsseldorf Marathon 13 days earlier, finished second with 33:23 while Carmen Siewert took third (35:07).
