Olympic year adds spice to Harry Jerome Meet competition

The Harry Jerome Track Classic is always a must-see for the Metro Vancouver athletics community but, in an Olympic year, the event produces an additional glow.

It's a tune-up for those who've punched their ticket to Beijing -- like 800-metre headliner Gary Reed -- and a second-last chance for the likes of UBC high jumper Mike Mason and SFU long jumper Ruky Abdulai.

"The event does take on a different flavour in an Olympic year," nodded Doug Clement, president of the Achilles Track and Field Society that stages the annual show. "All of the sudden, the athletes have to make certain standards. They have to jump high, throw far and run fast.
