New U.S. track chief understands field

A man in Doug Logan's position must be careful not to get carried away.

Logan, who begins Monday as USA Track & Field's new CEO, spent three days at the sport's recent Olympic trials in Eugene, Ore., where passionate, sellout crowds filled Hayward Field for eight straight days.

He will go next month to the Olympic Games, where track and field is the centerpiece sport, and the U.S. team should lead the sport's medal count.

That could create a misleading view of the sport's health in the United States.
