When the bids were in for U.S. cities vying to host the 2012 Olympic Games, Tampa had arguably the most ambitious plan of the bunch.
It raised more than $10 million, had 5,000 corporate and individual backers and enlisted the cooperation of an entire region. It was supported by neighboring St. Petersburg, by Orlando and by Walt Disney World, one of the most-visited tourist destinations on the planet. The bid offered 250,000 hotel rooms, plans for dozens of world-class athletic venues and new high-speed rail to whisk fans among the cities.
Tampa was cut in the first round. So what are Birmingham's chances?
