MANCHESTER, Conn. (AP) — Patrick Nthiwa of Kenya outkicked defending champion Andrew Letherby of Australia in the last 100 meters to win the 67th annual Manchester Road Race in 21 minutes, 37 seconds Thursday.
It was the 20-year-old's first appearance at the 4.748-mile Thanksgiving Day tradition, which brought 10,879 runners to downtown Manchester.
Emilie Mondor, 22, of Montreal, Canada, became the first woman to run under 24 minutes in the race when she won in 23:59, breaking Cathy O'Brien's 1991 course record of 24:06.
Natalie Harvey, 28, of Australia finished second (24:32) and Kate O'Neill, 23, of New Haven, a former Yale All-American in track and cross country, was third (24:46).
Alan Webb of Reston, Va. outran Jonathan Riley of Mountain View, Calif. to finish third (21:53) in his first official road race. Webb, 20, broke Jim Ryun's 36-year-old high school mile record two years ago as a high school senior.
