How They Trained: Greg Meyer
« on: March 04, 2011, 06:09:02 PM »
Check out this great interview podcast from Running Times: http://wpblogs.runningtimes.com/blogs/performancepodcasts/2011/03/podcast-greg-meyer-the-last-american-man-to-win-boston/

Some highlights:
  • 20-mile fartlek
  • Individual training adaptations regarding speed and endurance
  • Race-readiness
  • Competing vs. pacing
  • Integrating race seasoning into training
Why dink around? Go for it, be the best. It is worth whatever risk there is even if you fall short. You will be better.

Watched it yesterday and thought it was great. Maybe I just notice these things because I constantly hear people saying how 70 miles per week is too much but I also found his comments that he was a low volume runner compared to his contemporaries interesting. Especially once he mentioned that he averaged 100 miles per week for 7 years.

That 20 mile fartlek he described, though. Wow. What a workout.
