Why dink around? Go for it, be the best. It is worth whatever risk there is even if you fall short. You will be better.

It looks like she is really getting ready for a good showing - she has got some time to go yet though.  I hope that she races her best and does well.

I don't race or train at that level and I never will.  Two things struck me about this short article.  First, it sounds like the first time she has felt the feeling that so many of us have gone through after an untimely injury or very poor race performance.  The build-up of energy without an outlet to release.  Second, the attribution of the broken foot to a vitamin D deficeincy?  It takes me completely by surprise that a runner with as many resources as Deena Kastor (nutritionists, therapists, coaches and trainers) could fall prey to the deficeincy of such a common vitamin.  A vitamin that I probably overload on by accident because it is in so many of the foods that I eat while trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle and diet.  My gut reaction says that doesn't pass the smell test.

Vitamin D deficiency is actually quite a problem among the general population and certainly among athletes.  It is vital for calcium absorption, among other aspects, and is surprisingly (okay, not really) underaddressed by the medical establishment and thus mainstream consciousness.  Few people are at danger for overdosing.  I heard an interview on the radio a couple of days ago regarding this very topic.  It starts just before the 38-minute mark:
