Piriformis Syndrome
« on: November 27, 2009, 08:24:12 PM »
I've been having a terrible problem with Piriformis Syndrome for the past 18 months or so. First my left side last June and now my right side. I lay off the running for awhile and crosstrain and start to feel better but each time I ramp up the miles wham I get nailed again.  I'm 58 maybe it's time to slow down a bit but in '07 I had my best year racing; setting a number of PRs. Any help out there?? Thanks.

have you tried massage and/or stretching...there are plenty of stretches you can try through google and youtube ... then when you get past the worst you can try some strengthening exercises here, www.drpribut.com/sports/piriformis.html there is a lot of great info on Dr.Pribut's site

don't give up yet...

You are going to need a good Physical Therapist.  First get measured, standing,  barefooted.  We are looking for a "short" leg.  This can be caused by a muscle imbalance with the strong (dominant) side pulling down.  The other side can be slack (weaker).  You will need to work hip flexors and have the therapist watch you doing squats (light weight) but use free weights.  We look to see if the bar tilts or dips.

If you have a video of your form bring it to the therapist. There are issues with internal rotation etc. that can aggravate this condition.

Thanks for the input. There is a P/T in my office building. I'll make an appointment with him.
