Missy Buttry named USATF athlete of the week
« on: December 11, 2003, 09:00:18 AM »
INDIANAPOLIS – Missy Buttry has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning the women’s 6 km title Sunday at the 2003 USATF National Club Cross Country Championships at Bryan Park Golf Club in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Buttry, a junior at Wartburg College (Iowa) won the race in 19 minutes, 59.9 seconds. It was Buttry’s first career U.S. Open title. Buttry, the 2002 and 2003 NCAA Division III cross country champion, defeated 2002 NCAA Division I cross country runner-up Kate O’Neill by a little more than one second (20:01.4).

Now in its third year, USATF’s Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
"Biased one-sided training with an overemphasis on one component or quality is one of the biggest causes of injuries today." - Vern Gambetta
