Book Review: Running From the Devil

Running From the Devil is an intriguing story that is action packed and a fast read. However, many of the sentences are short which made the read a bit choppy and ‘mater of fact’ until I got used to that style of writing. The main character, Emma Caldridge, is developed pretty well but supporting characters are not as well developed and therefore seem a bit less real. You really do not get to know the other characters well enough and you have to think a little sometimes to remember their roles in the story.

The story has a good plot that builds in intensity and slowly reveals itself and has an interesting twist. The twist however, left me with a number of questions but this may have been due to my military background. Another issue in the plot for me is Emma’s sudden ability to utilize several items with absolutely no prior experience, especially considering that it is in a situation that is very hectic, demanding and beyond any normal psychological state. Again, this might only be a problem for me (or those with military experience) because of my personal knowledge and experience with items like those used in the story.

As far as a connection to running goes – runners understand the demands and abilities that the main character Emma faced and used. This makes the story more believable for us; most non-runners would never believe something like the Badwater Ultra-Marathon exists. Therefore, the skills that Emma draws upon would seem less real to them.

Overall – I did enjoy the story and it was worth my time in reading it. For those who do not have the same knowledge and experiences that I have – I would recommend the book as a very interesting story. I would caution those with military experience like mine about the issues I had within the story but that it is an enjoyable read otherwise.
