Major changes coming in September
by on Thursday, August 24, 2017

I'm going to attempt to explain what will be going on without getting into too many technical details. Hopefully, this won't sound intentionally vague. Sorry if it does.

HillRunner.com has been around for over 18 years. In that time, I've always built upon what has already existed, not wanting to rock the boat or even temporarily take away things that you have become used to having available unless absolutely necessary.

Unfortunately, that leads to a lot of old code that I wish I could clean up but, without major disruption, feel like I can't. It also leads to problems in other behind the scenes ways, meaning I spend more time on maintenance and less on either writing for HillRunner.com or developing new features.

Your Acute-to-Chronic (A:C) training ratio
by on Thursday, March 23, 2017

By now, I'm sure most of you know my thoughts on the "10% rule". It's far too simplistic. That said, there is such a thing as building up too quickly, right?

Of course there is. It's just not as simple as this week should always be no more than 10% more distance than last week.

Ideally, we listen to our bodies to know if problems are creeping up but what if we had cues to tell us when we may need to pay closer attention or take concerns more seriously?

Treadmill Pace Conversions FAQ
by on Thursday, January 5, 2017

Image

The Treadmill Pace Conversions chart is the most commonly visited page on HillRunner.com. It's also the page that, by far, I receive the most inquiries about. I'd like to take some time here to address some of the most common inquiries. Below, in no special order, are the most common questions I receive about the chart and my answers.

What is the source of the data for the chart?

Ask me anything
by on Thursday, June 2, 2016

Image

Another 6 months have passed. Here's your open invitation to ask me anything.

Within reason, nothing is off limits. Ask about training, racing, my thoughts on any news in the sport. Ask about the site, the coaching service, Club HillRunner.com or anything else that's going on.

If you want to ask publicly, you can do so in the comments, on Facebook or you can tweet at HillRunner.com (or tweet at my personal account). If you want to ask more privately, you can use the contact form or, if you're friends with me on Facebook or you know my email address, you can reach me through those options.

What's going on at HillRunner.com?
by on Thursday, April 21, 2016

A lot of things are happening all the time at HillRunner.com. Some are big enough to warrant their own blog post to cover, such as the recent return of more widespread ads (also covered below). Others are small enough to not warrant their own blog posts.

I'd like to occasionally round up some of the recent changes that are big enough to mention but not big enough for their own blog post. Here's my first attempt at doing so.

Training log features for Club HillRunner.com members

What's the deal with the ads?
by on Tuesday, April 5, 2016

I think it's been well established that I hate ads on HillRunner.com as much as anybody.

That said, I have to pay the bills somehow and I don't think it's fair to ask Club HillRunner.com members to carry the full burden. So, as much as I hate ads, I'm bringing them back.

As you may (or may not - I'll explain below) have already noticed, ads have returned to some of the most heavily visited parts of HillRunner.com. They will return to more areas as time goes on. However, not everyone will see them with the same frequency - or at all.

Administrative note: registration and forums
by on Wednesday, March 2, 2016

I hope it has mostly gone unnoticed to most of you but there has been a rash of attempted attacks by spammers over the past few days.

Largely, the spammers have been trying to do their thing over at the forums. There have been a few attempts on the blogs also but, as of now, those have not gotten through.

In order to combat these attacks, I made a few changes:

  • Registration (which goes through the forums) will now require email confirmation. Your account will not be active until you confirm your email address.

Looking back at 2015, forward to 2016 at HillRunner.com
by on Thursday, December 31, 2015

A new year is just about here. It's time to reflect on our accomplishments, running and otherwise. As a part of doing so, I wanted to offer a quick review of what I view are the key changes to take place in 2015 and what, as of now, I would say to expect in 2016.

    Looking back at 2015

2015 may outwardly not have looked like a real big year. The biggest change, both visibly and internally, would be the addition of Club HillRunner.com. This is something that I had been thinking about for some time and very early last year began planning for. It finally arrived during the summer and has been slowly growing since.

    Recent events at HillRunner.com
by on Monday, November 9, 2015

I'm sure most of you have noticed some of the recent events that have been going on at HillRunner.com. I just wanted to fill you all in with what has been going on.

For those of you who don't want the long story, scroll down to the Bottom Line heading.

For those of you who don't know how small operations like myself handle our websites, we don't have computers ourselves that they run on. I basically buy server space from a company that then hosts the website. The host then takes care of keeping the hardware HillRunner.com is on up to date, running and connected to the Internet 24/7.

    Summer schedule
by on Monday, June 1, 2015

As I often say about our running, we need to balance our priorities.

I'm taking my own advice this summer. Living in Wisconsin, I need to take advantage of the summer weather while I can. I'm going to be giving myself more time to enjoy time with my family. Camping trips, trips to the park, evenings outside playing and so on. As a result, I'm going to go to a summer blogging schedule of one post a week, on Thursdays.

I'll try to mix up the posts with some of the roundups that you normally see on Mondays and some of the original posts that you normally see on Thursdays but, to be honest, there will probably be more roundups.
