Predict your potential in one distance based on a performance in another
Directions for use:
- Enter a distance you have run recently in the first field after the
“I have run:” heading. This must be a number.
- Select the units for the distance you ran, either kilometers or miles
(1600 meters = 1.6 kilometers, etc.).
- Enter the time it took you to run that distance, in hh:mm:ss format after
the “In:” heading. All fields must be numbers.
- Enter the distance you want a prediction for in the first field after the
“What is my predicted time for:” heading. This must be a number.
- Select the units for the distance you want a prediction for, either
kilometers or miles.
- Click on calculate. Your predicted time will come out in the last field,
below the “Your predicted time” heading.
How does this get your predicted time?
The formula used for this calculator is one devised by Pete Riegel in the
late 70s. It has withstood the test of time as a formula as accurate as any out
there for running. In the early 80s, Riegel refined it for other sports for an
article entitled “Athletic Records and Human Endurance” published in American
Scientist. And now, the formula:
