I do remember being told that the first 10 seconds don’t really matter because, as your coach pointed out, you are using a different energy source. The runner who told me this was great off the starts and it did not seem to affect her at the finish.

As for my feeling, I don’t stretch it out to 10 seconds but I usually do take 10-20 steps as quickly as I can to get myself out of trouble in a race like a 1600 on the track. Even if you weren’t using a different energy source, I think this is a good idea to get yourself out of trouble when you’re on the track.
