I think it also depends on the race. I agree with the comment earlier about competing in the marathon. When doing a very large marathon like New York or Boston, time is much more important to me than pace. Place is still important but in reality 125th place vs. 259th really doesn’t mean a whole lot to me. I’m generally after a time goal in these races.
On the other hand, If I’m competing with other local yokels in a 10k you can bet we’re going to duke it out. I’m looking to beat people and generally they’re looking to beat me. This makes our sport fun.
