I like USC fan's ideas, but my take is always more time than distance…..egs 7 x 800m off 90 sec is great if u r running them in around 2:20, but tough if you are closer to 3mins for the 800m

…..and although I would also agree with the shorter reps concept I would also add some variety of either hills or fartlek (altenrating weeks???)

for racing sharpness put in some change of pace workouts in place of the longer intervals (egs 3-5 x 1000m of alternating 200 at mile pace and 200m at tempo pace) off 2-3mins
