these guys have the right of it… From a physiological point of view, it takes a few years to build up all the bodily systems to take advantage of whatever ability you have. In that time your body also builds up enough to be able to withstand the level of training longer distances demand. Could you do it in less time, sure, but you risk injury and not meeting your full potential till a later time…

on the other hand I really enjoy the longer distances (half, full and metric distances between, when I can find them)… but then I like nothing better than a solitary long run in double digits…also, while you're building up mileage there is nothing that says you can't race the shorter distances and use that as speed work as well as a barometer of how your training is really going.
