I'd suggest a peak race at the end of that 2-4 months, followed by whatever recovery period may be needed, then back into base training. Essentially, this is all about periodization (note: I mention 8-12 weeks for race prep there, might get extended a bit with the taper plus some people do better with a bit more time but most will peak out, depending on the number and intensity of workouts, in that 8-12 week period).
