Dick Quax would be a good source regarding Davies.  Anne Audain would as well, I believe she still lives in Boise, along with Lorraine Moller of course, who lives in Boulder.  Moller had been coaching locals, though I am unsure if she still does.  She is heavily involved with the Lydiard Foundation.  I seem to recall that part of Moller's training routine for her athletes that I picked up from a clinic she gave years ago was that she has them do something like 14-minute time trials (presumably at the track) every two weeks with a HRM at a set heart rate (presumably tied to 6-7/8 effort) to monitor training progress.  The time and HR remain static through the training phase or season and the only thing that should change is the distance covered.
