It will surely be painful, either way, and that pain is likely to only be worse the longer it is put off.  However, considering the rate of worldwide (especially Chinese) economic (and population) growth, the more rapidly fossil fuels run out the sooner there might be some genuine separation between the US and China, economically.  

No US president has ever attended a foreign Olympics, according to Wallechinsky in the audio file at the link above.  Interestingly, also according to Wallechinsky, the Chinese government is using the OG to propagandize not the rest of the world but the Chinese people with the idea that the rest of the world endorses the legitimacy of the Chinese communist party — only 5% of Chinese are members of the Chinese communist party.
