I also like the half marathon and one of my few regrets was not running more than a handful ca. age 22 to 40. However, I also miss the lack of 10K opportunity here. We have something like 80 races on our annual local calendar with only one or two 10Ks, and only one that's decent. I do the Midnight Sun Run 10K every year (except one when I did a marathon in Anchorage).
What I like about the half is that it is a good test of aerobic fitness without beating yourself up to a pulp as in a marathon and they are actually less taxing than 10Ks. The current fad phenom is interesting. Usually I do one or two a year and would make a destination race to the lower 48 if I could find top masters competition and/or a very fast course with typically good conditions.
