Patience, patience, patience. I've learned my marathon lesson and what I learned is this is the best advice anyone can give a marathoner.

The second best advice would be Castro's advice to be prepared for the bad patch. In a marathon, you're guaranteed to have at least one bad patch. The key is to get through it in as good condition as possible and then realize that you have plenty of time to get back on track if you actually lost any ground.
