You very well could be right.  However, it is easy to ignore one's body's signals, especially if they build slowly over time and especially if one's ambitions regarding the activity and one's goals within it are not checked sufficiently by rationality. 

The below is interesting, though within they imply something ('the benefit') that seems really tenuous to me anymore: running marathons (and training for them) constitutes a healthy level of exercise.
