I have lived / trained in Western NY, Downstate NY, Michigan and now in Eastern Massachusetts. I do dislike freezing rain and ice storms, otherwise, distance runs outside are pretty easy in the winter. I put on the poly / gore / wool mataz and I'm pretty comfortable most days. For me, doing any sort of quality work means running indoors which is dependent on good access to an indoor track as I have given up on trying to run fast with poor footing and multiple layers of clothing. Fewer daylight hours is tough though. I wonder how much of the diminished fitness is the result of that rather than the cold. For me, its a lot harder to get myself out the door to run outside in the dark. This effect ends up “costing” me a workout a week in the darker months.
