I think you might be getting caught up in semantics here. Running by feel is much more than “I feel sluggish today, I'm not going to do my workout”. In fact, that to me is, at most, one very small part of running by feel. It's getting into your workout and knowing that this workout should be run at 5K effort or just under 10K effort or whatever else and running at that effort level. Not all runners can feel this but all runners should be taught to feel this as it's critical to race day.
I agree that the Daniels chart can be a good starting point. That's why I created the calculator on this site based on that chart. However, it's a starting point. Even Daniels himself doesn't hold by those numbers. He specifically told my coach to slow me down in my interval workouts. The key is “know thyself” and that will be much better than any book or chart or calculator on a website. I personally haven't used the calculator on this site in years and it's been even longer since I have used the chart in the Daniels book because I learned how to determine the proper pace. Using the charts was part of the learning process but it was only once I learned to not worry about the charts that I became much better at setting the proper pace and not selling myself short on certain days while overextending myself on other days.
