I had noticed something significant during the games: the lack of medals (or even finalists, in some cases) in the jumps was huge. The US men used to be able to count on a medal or two in the long jump, usually at least one in the triple jump (through the '80s and '90s), and usually a medal or two in the high jump. In the men's long jump, in particular, the US has a long history of dominance yet had zero competitors in the final in Beijing. This is why I am puzzled by people lamenting over the performance of US distance runners in Beijing — the US has never been that good in the distance events, but the US has been great in the men's jumps and suddenly is a non-factor now.
