Mombasa, Kenya – Peter Kemboi defied the scorching sun to win the Mombasa International Marathon on Sunday, beating a modest field but finishing inside the course record of 2:11:06 set by Philip Kemei last year.

Kemboi, who trains in Kitale, one of Kenya's agricultural breadbasket areas a few kiloemetres north of Eldoret, stopped the clock in 2:09:21, considered one of the fastest given the humidity at Kenya's Indian Ocean port city where the 35th IAAF World Cross Country Championships was held in March.

Juliet Jepchirchir of Kapngetung Training Camp in Uasin Gishu won the women's race in 2:52:49 in a race which featured only seven women.
