China’s Xing Huina confirmed yesterday to the Yanzhao Metropolis Daily, a big newspaper in Hebei province, that she will not compete anymore in the 2008 season and consequently will not defend her Olympic 10,000m title in Beijing this summer.
The 24-year-old has had persistent injuries since the end of 2005 which have made training difficult. Her results in USA this year had already shown she was far away from her 2004 form – 1500m 4:32.24, 14 Mar; 5000m 16:50.42, 21 Mar; 15:54.75, 4 Apr.
However, Xing Huina also said that although she will not compete in Beijing this does not in any way mean she is retiring from the sport, and she is looking forward to the 2009 season.
