After seeking advice from those of you who use the forums, I have come to a final decision that should prevent the spam tactics that have been used on these forums lately but will have the least effect to legitimate users of the forums.
First, as was already put in place, when registering, you will receive an e-mail with information on how to activate your account. This will keep the spammers who use fake e-mail addresses from registering.
Second, while you can still enter your website in your profile, a link to your website will not be visible in the memberlist or from within your profile. The only place that your profile website will be visible is at the bottom of your posts. The spammers we have been seeing recently won’t be hanging out around here long enough to make a post so this means no links from them will show up.
If you would like to share your website with the users of these forums, you still can. The only catch is that you have to be an active member of these forums to do so. In other words, you have to actually post messages. I don’t think this should be too much to ask for. In addition to the link from your profile, you are of course welcome to use tasteful links to your website in your signature. Remember standard forum etiquette. Let your posts advertise your level of knowledge on a topic and let your signature show people where they can find more of what you offer in your posts.
