    The early pace wasn't as quick as Bernard Lagat typically prefers, and his final time was a bit slower than desired, but where he finished against one of the strongest fields of milers ever assembled, well, that felt just right.

    Lagat, the American record-holder and 2004 Olympic silver medalist in the 1,500 meters, moved to the front in the final lap and then held off Alex Kipchirchir at the end to win the Bowerman Mile in 3 minutes, 51.53 seconds at the Prefontaine Classic on Sunday at Hayward Field.
