The Ethiopian team for the 35th IAAF World Cross Country Championships arrived in Addis Ababa on Monday night (26) to be greeted at the airport with flowers and a welcome address by the nation’s Minister of Sport, Youth and Culture, as well as the athletic federation’s president, Bisrat Gashawtena, who had flown home earlier after accompanying the athletes both in body and in spirit.

In Mombassa, Gashawtena had draped cold water-moistened towels on the senior women’s medallists as they sat at the post-race press conference, and shared in the emotions that followed the defeat and heat-related distress of the athletes who live and train in the high altitude of Addis Ababa under normally temperate and dry conditions.
