SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ Kenya’s Gabriel Muchiri won the inaugural Salt Lake City Marathon on Saturday for his first title at 26.2 miles.

Russia’s Lioudmila Kortchaguina was the women’s winner, recording her 10th marathon victory.

Muchiri finished unofficially in 2 hours, 17 minutes, 21 seconds on a course that started at the University of Utah and finished downtown at the Olympic Legacy Plaza.

Muchiri’s previous best in a marathon was fourth place in Minneapolis. He took the lead Saturday near the 12-mile mark and held it the rest of the way.

Kortchaguina was timed in 2:30:47. She nearly topped her personal best of 2:29:53 in the Pittsburgh Marathon despite Salt Lake City’s high altitude _ averaging about 4,500 feet on the course.
