WORLD 5000m bronze medalist Moses Kipsiro was last Friday crowned Athlete of the Year 2007 by the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF). Kipsiro, 21, defeated compatriot Abraham Chepkirwok to the award he narrowly lost to Boniface Kiprop in 2006.
“It feels great being given this award. I never dreamt of ever becoming the best athlete in the country but I will work harder to get more honours,” Kipsiro told Daily Monitor.
He received the award a day before he won the MTN National Cross Country Championships 12km senior men's race at Soroti Sports Grounds. The hardly publicized awards ceremony took place at Soroti Lions Club, the first time the event has been held out of Kampala, and it was no surprise some UAF officials and athletes missed out. First runner-up Chepkirwok and second runner-up Justine Bayiga were crowned in abstentia.
