Olympic Marathon champion Stefano Baldini, who has also won two European titles in 1998 and 2006 and two World bronze medals in 2001 and 2003, has been out of sorts this year. The 36-year-old suffered from a bout of flu in mid-February which ruined his preparation for the London Marathon where he dropped out due to cramps, and then finished a disappointing seventh place at the Italian Half Marathon Championships in Udine last weekend.

With this backdrop of problems Baldini has today taken the decision to pull out of this summer’s IAAF World Championships in Osaka to concentrate on the defence of his Olympic title won in Athens in August 2004.
