The 13th edition of the Volkswagen Prague Marathon 2007 takes place this Sunday 13 May in the Czech capital, and will see the return of defending women’s champion Alina Ivanova of Russia (PB 2:25:34).
Ivanova will face strong opponents such as compatriot Larissa Zousko who was second in Rome in 2006 in her personal best of 2:26:26. Poland’s Malgorzata Sobanska, the former London marathon winner, is the only other sub-2:30 woman in the field.
The 38-year-old Ivanova is something of an athletic enigma. Having won the 1991 World 10km Race Walking title and the following year taking the European Indoor 3000m Walk gold, she switched her career to running and at her very best finished seventh at the London Marathon in 2001 in her 2:25:34 PB. She won last year’s Prague race in 2:29:20, and finished 23rd over 20km at last autumn's World Road Running Championships.
