It has been a trying year for Paula Radcliffe since she emerged from the final corner in Central Park and shook off Gete Wami, who had dogged her for 25.5 miles in the 2007 New York City Marathon. Five months after winning the race, she was sidelined by an injury that ultimately cost her a run at gold in the Olympic marathon.

But Radcliffe, the world-record holder, will attempt to put a year of struggles behind her when she returns to New York to defend her title on Nov. 2. Her entry in the elite field of the marathon was announced Wednesday morning by the New York Road Runners, the event organizers.
