Newly crowned World Cross Country champion Zersenay Tadesse will try to break the World Half Marathon record on 15 April in Cáceres, Spain.
The 25-year-old Eritrean has already proved his capabilities on the road by taking an overwhelming win at last year’s IAAF World Road Running championships in Debrecen, Hungary over 20km, a distance he covered in 56.01. The Madrid-based athlete holds a 59.05 time (downhill course – 30.5m) for the half marathon event set in South Shields, England at the Great North Run.
“A World record is always a very serious matter and tough to accomplish but Tadesse is definitely in World record breaking shape,” confirmed his Spanish coach Jerónimo Bravo after Tadesse’s shock win last Saturday (24 March) in Mombasa when his protégée managed to put – at least temporally – an end to Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele’s cross country supremacy.
