Marathon world record-holder Paul Tergat has pulled out of Sunday's Great North Run in Newcastle.

The Kenyan, 37, a former winner of the race, told organisers that his training performances had been disappointing.

Matthew Turnbull, the Great North Run's elite athletes director, said: “We respect Paul's wishes for not wanting to race when not fully prepared.”
