    May 11, 2004 — The United States Track Coaches Association announced that

    Andrew Ellerton of Michigan and Chelsea Hammond of South Carolina have been

    selected as the Athletes of the Week for NCAA Division I track & field.

    Andrew Ellerton of Michigan :

    Michigan sophomore Andrew Ellerton set a personal best for the third time in

    four weeks to capture the 800 meter run in 1:46.56 at the the Len Paddock

    Invitational on Friday, May 7 at Michigan. Ellerton’s performance also ranks

    as the second fastest time in the nation this season. The Windsor, Ontario

    native is qualified in the 800 and 1,500 meters for the NCAA Mideast

    Regional on May 28-29 hosted by Louisiana State University. Ellerton and the

    rest of his Michigan teammates will next compete at the Big Ten Outdoor

    Championships May 14-16 at Purdue.

    Chelsea Hammond of South Carolina :

    South Carolina junior Chelsea Hammond captured the long jump title at the

    Clemson Orange and Purple Classic with her leap of 21-06.25 (6.57m) on

    Saturday, May 8. The Penn Relays long jump champion moved up as the national

    leader in the event as well. Hammond is qualified in the high jump and long

    jump at the NCAA East Regional on May 28-29 hosted by Florida. She is also

    ranked fourth in the nation in the heptathlon with her NCAA provisional

    score of 5405. Hammond and the rest of the Gamecocks will travel to Oxford,

    Mississippi to compete in the SEC Outdoor Championships May 14-16.
