Last week, I ran a little over 74 miles. That makes 2023 the 30th consecutive year that I’ve had at least one week of 70 or more miles.
Especially for someone who doesn’t like the idea of chasing numbers, why does this matter?

This winter has been interesting. It kind of feels like an interval workout. Short bursts of intense winter with rest periods of quite mild weather.
However, those short bursts of intense winter weather have probably affected your training to some extent. Also, at least here in Wisconsin, we can rest assured that winter isn’t done with us yet.
When winter is done with you or when you get a break in winter like we’ve received at least a couple times here in Wisconsin, I’d like to encourage you to not get too carried away right away.

It’s gotten COLD here in Wisconsin this week. We had a mostly mild winter going but things changed quickly and drastically.

The 2002 Lakefront Marathon was run on a day with 25-30 mile per hour winds gusting to 50 miles per hour. Almost the entire race was run with a headwind.
Over its history, the Boston Marathon has included snow, historic winds and extreme heat. On a few occasions, they even have had good conditions.

The new year is here! Did you create some resolutions or just set some running goals for the new year that you’re ready to chase down?
Whether the goals are focused on process/training (maybe weekly or yearly miles, maybe a certain training schedule or amount of auxiliary training) or focused on an outcome (such as reaching a qualifying time or simply a time goal for a given race or distance) you might have big plans about how you’re going to revamp your training to accomplish the goals.
Just don’t change too much, too soon.
