Don’t come out of winter too hot

Spring is coming!

This winter has been interesting. It kind of feels like an interval workout. Short bursts of intense winter with rest periods of quite mild weather.

However, those short bursts of intense winter weather have probably affected your training to some extent. Also, at least here in Wisconsin, we can rest assured that winter isn’t done with us yet.

When winter is done with you or when you get a break in winter like we’ve received at least a couple times here in Wisconsin, I’d like to encourage you to not get too carried away right away.

While this may seem like a strange winter to write about this topic due to how it’s been broken up and on average quite mild, it’s still important.

You’ve probably modified your training in some way during the winter. Maybe fewer workouts, maybe lower volume, maybe some combination of both. Maybe even some cross training instead of heading out the door to run in the worst of the winter conditions.

When the better weather returns and you’re ready to turn things back on, take a realistic appraisal of where you stand. Are you really ready to jump into spring training head first? Or are you better off gradually building back into things? I think you know the right answer.

So don’t get too carried away as the weather improves. Pace yourself so you can spend the spring and summer running strong.
