It’s summer vacation time! In fact, very soon, I’ll be heading out for some family time on the beach.
But I’m also doing a summer racing season so I don’t have to deal with trying to balance my own racing with my daughter’s racing.
So what should I do?
Well, I’m not going to stop running. In fact, I’m probably not going to stop my workouts. This vacation is probably going to work out in a way that I’ll probably be able to have it all, vacation/relaxation time and training. But what if I wasn’t in that situation? What if I had to give somewhere?
I’d back off the training. If you have a vacation planned that will require some give and take, I hope you will make the same decision.
How much are you really going to gain with a week of training? How much is that week of training really going to make you faster at your next race? Meanwhile, how much are you going to gain by being present at and having energy for your family’s vacation?
Sure, if we deviate from the plan, we’re giving something up. But, for one week, it’s pretty minimal. As long as you are not consistently deviating from the plan, be willing to be flexible with your training while on vacation. Enjoy vacation, consider it a little bonus recovery period, then get back to “work” when the vacation is over.
