Vacations and running

Getting to where you get this kind of view takes a lot of effort

I just got back from a family vacation and am about to head out on another vacation with my daughter and a friend of hers.

My training is kind of a mess right now and I wouldn’t want it any other way.

Of course, summer is vacation season for many of us. School is out, the weather is nice, it’s time to get out and explore, relax, or whatever you enjoy doing while on vacation.

During this time, realize that your training may get a bit off. During my family vacation, I was doing a lot of hiking with a lot of challenging elevation gains. During the coming vacation, I have some interesting physical challenges, including but definitely not limited to more mountain hikes, on the plan.

With these kinds of vacations, it would be reckless to try to maintain a full training load no matter what. Your body can only handle so much. If you want a relaxing vacation, it might not be as relaxing as you wish if you’re still training hard. Whatever the case, remember that vacation time should change our priorities.

The training will still be there for you when you get home, even if like me you’re only home for two weeks before heading out again. Bring your running gear on vacation. I strongly believe that running while on vacation can enhance the experience. However, don’t beat yourself up to get your usual training routine in. If you can, great. If not, you can get back into the rhythm when you return home.
