Smile!

Some people say it looks like Eliud Kipchoge is a “happy” runner. He seems to be smiling when he races, sometimes even when most of us would be grimacing. I can think of other runners who were similar. It at least looked like they were smiling, even during very difficult points in races.

Is Kipchoge really smiling? Somewhere along the line, I recall reading that he says he does intentionally smile because it helps him run better. Is he on to something?

Don’t come out of winter too hot

Spring is coming!

This winter has been interesting. It kind of feels like an interval workout. Short bursts of intense winter with rest periods of quite mild weather.

However, those short bursts of intense winter weather have probably affected your training to some extent. Also, at least here in Wisconsin, we can rest assured that winter isn’t done with us yet.

When winter is done with you or when you get a break in winter like we’ve received at least a couple times here in Wisconsin, I’d like to encourage you to not get too carried away right away.

Racing in bad conditions

2002 Lakefront Marathon

The 2002 Lakefront Marathon was run on a day with 25-30 mile per hour winds gusting to 50 miles per hour. Almost the entire race was run with a headwind.

Over its history, the Boston Marathon has included snow, historic winds and extreme heat. On a few occasions, they even have had good conditions.
