Recently, I pulled a hamstring avoiding a homicidal driver of a pickup truck who decided stop signs are optional and people in crosswalks want to die.
This week, I came down with a cold.
The past month has been rough.
We all have times like this. We get injured. We catch a cold or, worse, the flu. A big project at work saps our energy. Family issues get in the way of our best laid running plans.
When these things happen, we need to be able to roll with the punches. We need to adjust the plan. We can’t change what happened but we can change how we go forward and making that change can be the difference between success and failure.
How do we go about these changes? Let’s take a look at my situation right now and how I’m changing my plan.
I’m already committed to a 5K on April 14th. I’ve convinced others to run it, I can’t back out. I was originally planning to go all in and attempt to “defend the title” after winning this race last year. Now, I’m just using it as a tune up and fitness check. If I’m in position to win, wonderful. But I’m not going to get down on myself even if I’m significantly slower than last year.
I was thinking of finding another tune up race in May. I’m now scratching that idea so I can get some extra focus on training and because I know my work life may become somewhat stressful in May.
Going into the summer, I expect to be about 2 weeks behind what I had normally planned. I’ll have to race that way at the Walleye Run in June. That’s life.
By the time the fall season rolls around, which is the more important one to me, it will all work out. I’ll be back on plan and, trying to look at this from a positive angle, maybe it will help me time my peak better.
So that’s it for me this year. As of now at least. The training gets pushed back a bit, the immediate racing season gets adjusted, and I get back on track for the fall racing season. It doesn’t take a lot of major changes but it takes a willingness to be flexible.
So next time you face some unforeseen circumstances, I hope you’ll think over the best path forward and adjust your plans accordingly. It can be frustrating but it’s the best way to continue on the path toward your long term goals.
