Working out is good for you

This seems like the appropriate time of the year for this reminder, as we are meeting with family and friends who always want to remind us that we work out too much. The common refrain is that staying in shape is good but too much is bad.

Well, that’s just not the case. Don’t worry. You’re not working out too much.

First, a reminder that being fit is good for you. In fact, it may be as good for you as not smoking.

Or, as I saw someone rephrase this, not being fit is as bad for you as smoking. I like that phrasing. It really puts things in perspective.

In short, this study found that some fitness is good. More is better. There isn’t such a thing as too much. The more fit you are, the better your health outcomes. Or, as already mentioned, the less fit you are, the greater the health risk.

Second, another nice reminder: regular exercise may keep your body 30 years “younger”.

In short, the muscles of older people who work out regularly are extremely similar to healthy people in their 20s.

Why does this matter? Because one of the greatest health risks of aging is weaker muscles. If regular working out means your muscles look like those of someone 30 years younger, then you’re pushing back one of the most serious health risks associated with aging.

Finally, a partial rehash of the first study but combined with a second study: there’s no such thing as being too fit.

Yes, right back where we started. Because it’s important to remember this message. Don’t pick fights with your family members over this. It’s just not worth it. However, keep in mind that you are doing what’s right for your body and for your health. So keep at it through the holiday season and into the new year.

  1. Well said!! Non runner or non exercisers believe that 15-20 miles per week ” is an excess”. Better to do your thing and dont pay attention to people that dont have a clue!

    1. Exactly Cesar. Sure, there is a point of too much but the current research suggests it should be thought of more in terms of injury and burnout. The current research still says more is better in terms of long term health outcomes.
